Bill and Tom Kaulitz are the new members of this years Jury at the casting show “Deutschland such den Superstar”, which will start airing on RTL on January 5th at 8.15 p.m. The twins got famous and known with their band “Tokio Hotel”, with which they’ve sold countless records and toured all over the world with. When meeting the “Superstars” Bill and Tom you’ll be pleasently surprised: both are polite, courteous, taller than you’d think but they still clearly differ from one another. But they agree on one point – the show is a lot of fun, and they want it to be fun for the viewers and their fans as well…
TVdirekt: Why did you decide to join the DSDS-Jury?
Bill Kaulitz: We decided to join this show, because it’s the most successful casting show. In addition to that the winner is going to have the perfect start into the music business. A #1-single and a successful first album are almost guaranteed, plus the winner will also get 500,000 €. That’s a lot of money, which you can still work with as a musician after DSDS.
Tom Kaulitz: It was also very well timed – if we didn’t do it now, we would have never done it.
Bill Kaulitz: DSDS is the show we believe in most. A casting show with a great foundation for the winner.
TVdirekt: Would you have wanted such an entry into the music business for Tokio Hotel?
Tom Kaulitz: We had an incredible amount of luck!
Bill Kaulitz: Yes, our story is a Cinderella story which barely happens in the music business nowadays. We were discovered in a live-club in our hometown. When I look back it seems impossible to me, how it all worked out, that someone actually discovered us in our hometown.
Tom Kaulitz: We were newcomers, got our first record deal with a really small budget for a music video and marketing. We were just incredibly lucky that it worked out so well without such a platform like DSDS.
Bill Kaulitz: Nowadays, the record labels don’t want to spend money on anything. There aren’t a lot of talent scouts left who look for bands and invest in them, as there were ten years ago. As a young musician, especially when you’re from the countryside, you have no opportunity to show that you’ve got talent. How do you want to make it to a big city from a little village with only your talent? Back then we also didn’t know how we should do it and if we should send a Demo to a record label. The show gives the winner a good start into the business and when they’re in, it’s their responsibilty to make something out of themselves.
Tom Kaulitz: I think this is exactly what the people are becoming more aware of! Through that, casting shows little by little get a whole other kind of reputation, than they had in the past. Back then the people said, casting – is this really neccessary? Meanwhile casting shows are more accepted and respected. The music business changed so drastically, that this is the only way to have some kind of success. We were one of the last bands in Germany, that were able to do it “the natural way”. Today it’s different…in the US some of the greatest artists have been sitting in the Jury of the casting shows for a long time, to give aspiring artists some type of input.
Bill Kaulitz: Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj are on American Idol. Furthermore rock legend Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears also make up Jurys and look at people, because it’s a great way to find new talent.
Tom Kaulitz: We want to give the people tips for a career behind the scenes and help and support them with their start into the music business.
TVdirekt: How did the castings go? Did you discover any new talents?
Bill Kaulitz: We have a lot of hope. We started casting in Berlin for nine days and saw hundreds of people. That was really strenuous, I have to admit – but it was also fun. 71 of those talents made it to the recall. Later we learned that normally about 120 people make it to the recall, so we were really strict.
Tom Kaulitz: But we were a nice kind of strict!
Bill Kaulitz: We sent some great candidates into the next round and chose 36 people in the Recall who will go on the rest of the journey with us. We’re happy and have some good singers and personalities in there.
Tom Kaulitz: At the recall there were some people, where you expected a lot from them based on the impression they left at their casting, but then they suddenly completely screwed up. This is really the first test, where you can find out who will be able to handle the pressure and who just isn’t cut out for it. We had a great location, the coaches where already doing their work and the candidates had 24 hours to rehearse and learn the song. Some people disappointed and some people surprised us.
TVdirekt: How do the candidates react to you?
Bill Kaulitz: We don’t know what happens behind the camera, but there are certainly people who leave the room and vent about what we told them. We had one or two candidates of this sort.
Tom Kaulitz: There was one girl, we had to tell her that it just wasn’t enough and she looked at us in such a way that you got the feeling that you have to spiritually cleanse yourself.
Bill Kaulitz: There was one guy that stepped into the room, and just really blew me away. There was a moment where I just thought “wow”! I really didn’t expect that. After he sang he started getting really unfair and made a huge scene. He said that he thinks it’s a shitty move from our us that we’re parading him around and making a fool out of him. I stopped him in his tirade and explained that this was not in our interest. Everyone gets their fair chance and we want to have great singers. Some just aren’t good enough during the casting, but they know this beforehand!
Tom Kaulitz: We’ll see what they said backstage when the show airs.
TVdirekt: How hard is being a “Superstar” (winer of the show)?
Bill Kaulitz: A lot of people aren’t aware of what it means to lead this kind of life. During our decision making process it’s not just about good voices and awesome singers. It’s also about who can handle everything that comes with it. For this, the show is a good start, because the candidates get a kind of “crash course”. They’re on TV and around cameras 24/7. They have to give interviews from the start and with the live shows also comes a lot of pressure from the media. If you make it, you’ll also be able to handle everything that comes afterwards. During the casting it’s important to watch who will be able to handle such a life. We had to tell some candidates that they’re too young and fragile to survive in this business – that they’re never gonna lead such a life, that it would be the wrong thing for them.
TVdirekt: Is this your strength in the jury? To estimate the people regarding that?
Tom Kaulitz: I wouldn’t say that it’s our only strength…(laughs) But the experience we have is, of course, a huge advantage. We had to handle a lot of pressure from the media at the beginning of our career, so we can comprehend what kind of phases those people are going through.
TVdirekt: You are now mainly living in Los Angeles. Do you just meet celebrities on the street and go and grab a coffee with them?
Tom Kaulitz: Of course we meet other artists in L.A., but its not the rule that you meet celebrities on the street – I think that’s more of a myth. But I think you’re asking that the wrong people…(laughs)

TVdirekt: Do you like to take part of the jury of DSDS?
Bill: It is a great pleasure. But when there are people in front of you and looks at you with so much hope … All those big dreams, there are adult contestants who have been making music for a long time, and our decision can radically change their lives!
TVdirekt: How is your relationship with DSDS boss Dieter Bohlen?
Bill: Well! We are all different ages, we make different types of music, they were participants who got hits, and Tom and I could say nothing, we are within the scope of Dieter. So they all had their own territory.
TVdirekt: Do you watch yourselves in your auditions on TV?
Bill: I do not like looking at myself on TV…
Tom: I do not like listening to me neither looking at me. My first experience in this area was in school as a student. I had to play “Brave Little Tailor”. And then when the family saw it, it was an horror …

TVdirekt: ¿Por qué decidisteis uniros al jurado de DSDS?
Bill Kaulitz: Hemos decidido unirnos a este programa, ya que es el show más exitoso de cástings. Además de que el ganador va a tener un comienzo perfecto en el negocio de la música. Conseguir un Nº1 y un primer álbum de éxito está casi garantizado, además de que el ganador también recibirá 500.000 €. Eso es un montón de dinero, y puede trabajar como un músico después de DSDS.
Tom Kaulitz: También estaba muy bien cronometrado – si no lo hago ahora, nunca lo hubiera hecho.
Bill Kaulitz: DSDS es el espectáculo en el que creemos la mayoría. Un espectáculo de cásting con una gran base para el ganador.
TVdirekt: ¿Te hubiera gustado esa entrada en el negocio de la música con Tokio Hotel?
Tom Kaulitz: ¡Hemos tenido una increíble suerte!
Bill Kaulitz: Sí, nuestra historia es una historia de Cenicienta, que apenas ocurre en el negocio de la música hoy en día. Nos descubrieron en un club en vivo en nuestra ciudad. Cuando miro hacia atrás me parece imposible la forma en que todo salió bien, que alguien realmente nos descubriese en nuestra ciudad natal.
Tom Kaulitz: Estábamos recién llegados, conseguimos nuestro primer contrato discográfico con un presupuesto muy pequeño para un video musical y marketing. Fuimos increíblemente afortunados de que todo saliese tan bien sin una plataforma como DSDS.
Bill Kaulitz: Hoy en día, las compañías disqueras no quieren gastar dinero en cualquier cosa. No hay una gran cantidad de buscadores de talento que dejaron de buscar bandas e invertir en ellos, ya que había hace diez años. Como músico joven, especialmente cuando estás en el campo, no tienes la oportunidad de demostrar que tienes talento. ¿Cómo quieres que lo haga a una gran ciudad de un pueblo pequeño con sólo su talento? En aquel entonces tampoco sabía cómo debíamos hacerlo y si hay que enviar una maqueta a un sello discográfico. El programa ofrece al ganador un buen comienzo en el negocio y cuando están en él, es su responsabilidad hacer algo fuera de sí mismos.
Tom Kaulitz: ¡Creo que esto es exactamente de lo que las personas son cada vez más conscientes! A través de este, echando muestra poco a poco consiguess un tipo completamente diferente de reputación, de la que tenían en el pasado. En aquel entonces la gente decía- ¿es esto realmente necesario? Mientras tanto espectáculos de cástings son más aceptados y respetados. La industria de la música ha cambiado tan drásticamente, que esta es la única manera de tener algún tipo de éxito. Fuimos una de las últimas bandas en Alemania, que fueron capaces de hacerlo “de forma natural”. Hoy es diferente … en los EE.UU. Algunos de los más grandes artistas se han sentado en el jurado de los espectáculos por un largo tiempo, para darle a los artistas una entrada a la que aspiran algún día.
Bill Kaulitz: Mariah Carey y Nicki Minaj se encuentran en American Idol. La leyenda del rock Steven Tyler, Jennifer López, Britney Spears también forman parte del jurado y observan a la gente, porque es una gran manera de encontrar nuevos talentos.
Tom Kaulitz: Queremos darle a la gente consejos para una carrera detrás de las escenas y ayudarles y apoyarles con su inicio en el negocio de la música.
TVdirekt: ¿Cómo van los castings? ¿Descubristeis algún talento nuevo?
Bill Kaulitz: Tenemos mucha esperanza. Empezamos castings en Berlín durante nueve días y vimos a cientos de personas. Eso fue realmente agotador, tengo que admitirlo – pero también fue divertido. 71 de esos talentos llegaron al recall. Más tarde nos enteramos de que, normalmente, alrededor de 120 personas llegan allí, así que fuimios muy estrictos.
Tom Kaulitz: ¡Pero éramos una especie de gente estricta pero agradable!
Bill Kaulitz: Hemos enviado a algunos grandes candidatos a la siguiente ronda y 36 personas elegidas en el recall harían el resto del viaje con nosotros. Estamos felices y hay algunos buenos cantantes y personalidades allí.
Tom Kaulitz: En el recall había algunas personas de las que se espera mucho de ellos a partir de la primera impresión que dejaron en su casting, pero luego de repente completamente lo fastidiaron. Esta es realmente la primera prueba, donde se puede averiguar quién será capaz de manejar la presión y quién simplemente no está hecho para esto. Los couches tuvimos una excelente ubicación, que ya estamos haciendo nuestro trabajo y los candidatos tuvieron 24 horas para ensayar y aprender la canción. Algunas personas nos decepcionaron y algunas personas nos sorprendieron.
TVdirekt: ¿Cómo reaccionan los candidatos con vosotros?
Bill Kaulitz: No sabemos lo que pasa detrás de la cámara, pero sin duda hay personas que salen de la habitación y están atentos a lo que dicen. Teníamos uno o dos candidatos de este tipo.
Tom Kaulitz: Hubo una chica a la que tuvimos que decirle que eso no era suficiente y nos miró de tal manera que me dio la sensación de que nosotros teníamos que limpiarnos espiritualmente.
Bill Kaulitz: Había un hombre que entró en la habitación, y realmente me impactó. Hubo un momento en que pensé ¡”wow”! Realmente no lo esperaba. Después cantó y empezó poniendose muy injusto e hizo una escena enorme. Él dijo que él cría que estábamos removiendo nuestra mierda y que lo estamos mostrando y haciendo el tonto. Lo detuve en su diatriba y le expliqué que esto no era de nuestro interés. Todo el mundo tiene su oportunidad justa y queremos tener grandes cantantes. Algunos simplemente no son lo suficientemente buenos durante el casting, ¡pero saben esto de antemano!
Tom Kaulitz: Ya veremos lo que decían en backstage cuando el programa se emita.
TVdirekt: ¿Cómo de difícil es ser una “Superestrella”?
Bill Kaulitz: Muchas personas no son conscientes de lo que significa llevar este tipo de vida. Durante nuestra toma de decisiones, no se trata sólo de buenas voces y cantantes increíbles. Se trata también de que puedan manejar todo lo que supone. Para ello, el espectáculo es un buen comienzo, ya que los candidatos reciben una especie de “curso acelerado”. Están en la televisión y en torno a las cámaras 24/7. Tienen que dar entrevistas desde el principio y con los shows en vivo también incluyen una gran cantidad de presión de los medios de comunicación. Si lo hacen, también serán capaces de manejar todo lo que viene después. Durante el casting, es importante observar que será capaz de manejar este tipo de vida. Tuvimos que decirle a algunos candidatos que son demasiado jóvenes y frágiles para sobrevivir en este negocio – que nunca van a llevar una vida así, que sería algo equivocado para ellos.
TVdirekt: ¿Es ésta su fuerza en el jurado? ¿Valorais a las personas con respecto a eso?
Tom Kaulitz: Yo no diría que es nuestra única fuerza … (risas) Pero la experiencia que tenemos es, por supuesto, una gran ventaja. Tuvimos que manejar una gran cantidad de presión de los medios de comunicación al principio de nuestra carrera, para que pudíesemos comprender qué tipo de fases esas personas están atravesando.
TVdirekt: Ahora estais viviendo principalmente en Los Angeles. ¿Conocéis a celebridades en la calle y vais a tomar un café con ellos?
Tom Kaulitz: Por supuesto, conoces a otros artistas en Los Ángeles, pero no es la regla que cumple con las celebridades en la calle – Creo que eso es más un mito. Pero creo que estás preguntando a la gente equivocada … (risas)

TVdirekt: ¿Os gustan formar parte de los miembros del jurado de DSDS?
Bill: Es un gran placer. Pero cuando hay gente delante de ti y te mira con tanta esperanza…Todos esos grandes sueños, hay concursantes adultos que han estado haciendo música durante mucho tiempo, y nuestra decisión ¡puede cambiar radicalmente sus vidas!
TVdirekt: ¿Cómo os llevais con el jefe de DSDS Dieter Bohlen?
Bill : ¡Bien! Todos somos de edades diferentes, hacemos diferentes tipos de música, fueron los participantes que consiguieron hits, y Tom y yo no podíamos decir nada, están dentro del alcance de Dieter. Así que todos ellos tenían su propio territorio.
TVdirekt: ¿Os veis en vuestras audiciones en la televisión?
Bill: No me gusta verme a mí mismo en la tele…
Tom : No me gusta ni escucharme ni verme a mí mismo. Mi primera experiencia en esta área fue en la escuela como estudiante. Tenía que interpretar “Brave Little Taylor”. Y luego cuando lo veía la familia, era un horror…
